Surrey Waste Partnership

The Surrey Waste Partnership was formed by the Surrey Local Government Association (SLGA) to ensure that Surrey's waste is managed in the most efficient, effective and sustainable manner. The Waste Partnership incorporates a member from each of the Surrey Boroughs and Districts plus three members from Surrey County Council. It is supported by an officer group and a small Chief Executives group. It provides a forum where leaders and senior officers can work together to provide better services for the people of Surrey.
The Surrey Local Government Association has worked together to develop the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy (JMWMS), which aims to improve and strengthen the management of waste in Surrey. This was produced following a county-wide dialogue about waste issues and how best to face them in the most efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The strategy took on board the views of the people of Surrey as well as the changing targets set by regional and national bodies. The strategy is set for twenty years, to run from 2006 to 2026. It was revised in September 2010 to update technological advances and to improve targets based on sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Successful delivery requires a collaborative contribution from all of the local authorities in Surrey. The Surrey Waste Partnership was formed to facilitate this collaboration.
The Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy can be found at:

Its vision statement is:
"To provide Surrey with a forward-looking strategy for a more sustainable future. The vision is for a County in which resources are used and managed efficiently so that by 2026:
- The amount of waste produced will continue to be recuced or reused.
- Materials reused, recycled or composted will exceed 70%.
- The environment will be protected and enhanced for future generations."
The Surrey Waste Partnership is working to ensure the realisation of this vision for all of Surrey's communities. Since the implementation of the Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy in 2006, the Partnership has continued to facilitate and develop joint working through a series of projects and work groups. Work includes the successful campaign "There are 3 R's in Surrey." This project increased awareness of waste issues across Surrey and encouraged residents and businesses to Reduce, Reuse and Recyle their waste. Other projects include 'Love Food Surrey,' a campaign to encourage residents to reduce their food waste.
